Does anyone know hot to open a web-based Excel file using Office for Mac 2004? In windows, for example, you can do file: open: <http://example.com/example.xls>, but in Mac's OS X there is no area to input a URL, you can only select files on the Mac HD or local network.

Hi,

Internet Explorer in Windows can use Office applications as web browser
plug-ins, which gives the appearance that the spreadsheet is running in
the web browser (it isn't really, but it looks like it is).

On the Mac, Safari has this sort of plug-in behavior with Adobe Portable
Document Format (PDF) files.

Personally, I dislike this behavior, but I understand that many people
are used to it and I know some people actually like it.

At any rate, in Mac web browsers if you click a link that has an xls
file, what happens depends upon what web browser you are using and what
options are selected for downloading files in the preferences for that
web browser.

You can choose to have your browser download the file to a folder that
you designate. Some browsers will offer to open the file automatically.
