opening a word document

Help!

Several days ago I tried to open a document that word did not
recognize. I must have changed something because now I can only open
a document if I open Word first and go to "Open" in the File menuand
highlight the file and press Open. Double clicking on the icon in the
document window does not work. Can someone help me find what I need
to do to change that preference. I have already tried to go to the
properties settings but I can't figure it out.

Hi

If you are using OSX then single-click on the document's icon. Use File >
Get Info from the menu and click the disclosure triangle next to Open With.

Click in the dropdown and then navigate to the Microsoft Word application.
Click the box so that OSX remembers to use Word for this type of file from
now on.
