opening a .xls spreadsheet

i have been sent a .xls spreadsheet via an e-mail attachment but cant seem
to find a programme on my windows xp system that will allow it to open? any
advice?

Excel should be able to open it, but for information beyond that it would be
best to post the question in an Excel newsgroup. This newsgroup is for
Microsoft access, a relational database program.

Try with a plain text editor or a binary viewer.

I know of at least one dozy mare of a company that sends out html files
(and badly-formed html at that) with a .xls extension, for reasons best
known to themselves.

Ask the person who sent it to you. They should know which software they
created it on.
