Hi,

First problem:
Word freezes often, particularly upon pasting selected/copied text from
a website into Word.

Second problem:
When frozen, I have to force quit. When I re-open Word, my toolbars
are gone, there is only a blank document set just below the menu bar.
I have to go to view<toolbars, and pick out the toolbars to get them
back.

I don't know why I'm freezing so often, and I don't know why the tool
bars disappear when I re-open the program.

Thanks, Rafael

Re the toolbars vanishing--as I said in the other thread re loosing View,
it's probably damaged prefs. Much of the time, consistent crashing is also
damaged prefs.

However, I strongly suggest that you also run through the basics on this
page:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

Check your updating, repair disk permissions, then test your prefs. If prefs
doesn't do it, test the Normal template, then global templates if still not
fixed.

Hi Daiya

I did solve the missing view menu by going to
customize/menus>commands>categories>built-in menus, then to the right
press 'view' and drag it to the customize main menu bar.

Re missing toolbars, I'll look at 'damaged preferences' article. Also
I'll check the
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm.

In Safari, I was looking for 'refresh' as in explorer, but I can only
find 'Reload Page' under View. That's what I've been using and I think
I'm seeing that it does refresh.

There are some wierd things-at least for me so far- going on in
Word 2004. for instance, when I click customize, the screen comes on
and the top of it is behind the toolbars where I can't see the two
tabs, 'Toolbars' and 'Commands'. The only place to drag the customize
window is from the top, which is hidden behind the toolbars so I have
to move the toolbars out of the way to get at it, a really awkward
thing to do. Didn't previous versions allow sindows to be dragged from
all four sides?

Another thing is that I can't find a box on a window to close the
window up like a pop-up menu, leaving only its title bar on the
desktop. There used to be a box on the upper right corner with a
vertical line that popped the body of the window out of sight. Is
there a new way to do this?

And another thing. I will be going onto email for this newsgroup when
I get all these new programs sorted out. In the meantime, on this web
newsgroup, I first entered with the nickname the same as my primary
email address. I just changed that to my name for fear of exposing
that address to address harvesting spammers. Is that right? Do they
harvest from this site as they do from our email based NG where I have
a fake DBA?

Thanks, Rafael

Yeah, but your prefs are still damaged, considering all the other issues. (I
think.) In general, if Word starts to misbehave, testing your prefs file is
never a bad idea.

Refresh, reload, same difference. In this context, they are synonyms. I'll
change my boilerplate, though, now that you've pointed that out. :)

By the way: The stop button in the Safari toolbar (icon X) should turn into
a reload button (icon partial circle with arrow) once the page is finished
loading. Under View>Show in Safari, there are about 10 things you can
check/uncheck to control what shows on the toolbar.
There are some wierd things-at least for me so far- going on in
Word 2004. for instance, when I click customize, the screen comes on
and the top of it is behind the toolbars where I can't see the two

That Word doesn't remember where you had the Customize dialog the last time
is probably also caused by the damaged preferences. Not sure what would
cause the original screwiness. Possibly also corrupt prefs. Also, your
toolbars may not be properly docked. Float them around until they drop into
a "sweet spot" at the top of the window. If the toolbars are properly
docked, then Word will automatically move everything out of their way.
However, a fresh set of prefs will probably also re-dock the toolbars in
their default position, so just test the prefs before bothering with that.

I don't remember. But I think that's related to the change from OS 9 to OS X
rather than Word-specific. I think Apple has guidelines about that.

This is an OS change, not a Word change, so across all apps. The middle
traffic light at top left (yellow) will shrink the page into the dock, and
that's the OS equivalent of clicking to shrink the page up to the title bar.
The previous behavior can only be recaptured with third-party programs.

Well, it's all the same place, just different means of accessing it. Google
hides your email address from people using Google, but I still see it using
the newsreader, so a spammer could too. But I don't know what spammers use
to harvest addresses.

It's the prefs.. or the Normal template. Word stores a lot of
customizations in there. Usually the toolbar customizations are saed
there.

I should have continued, "and if the prefs are fine, test the Normal
template." :) But Rafael has had damaged prefs before, I wanted him to
know it is a general troubleshooting tip for many situations.

Although toolbar customizations are saved in the Normal template, toolbar
position, location, and off/on status are saved in preferences.

Effectively, the Tools | Customize Toolbars dialog seems to be split: user
actions from the Toolbars tab are saved in prefs, user actions from the
Commands tab are saved in Normal. Oddly logical, yet still annoying,
especially since the Save in: Normal option appears on both tabs.

Hi Daiya,

Starting to fix preferences, I am at MVP Update and I got to a download
ofMicrosoft Office 2004 for Mac Service Pack 2 (11.2) and I am being
led through removing office 1998 and office 2001 components, leaving
files I have created. I *think* it's ok to press these buttons, but it
occurs to me to ask if this has any bearing on my word 2001 documents
that would be opened in "Classic". n I'm not even sure about
that...that that's where the documents are opened. Don't older word
applications automatically convert to the installed newer application
upon opening?

Thanks, Rafael

Hi,

Is there a way to have the messages in this newsgroup appear in reverse
chronological order, post #7 at the top, then post #8 on top of that so
that the latest post can be read when the site opens?

Hi Rafael,

I realise that you were asking Daiya, but I just happen to be around here,
and since I know the answer to your question, I thought I should simply
reply.

If you have older files that insist on being opened in Word 2001, simply
ctrl-click or right-click on one of them in the Finder and select Get Info.
Towards the bottom of that panel, you should see a section labelled "Open
With"; click on the dropdown menu and select Microsoft Word v.11 (if it is
not part of the list, choose other and select Word in the dialogue that
shows up), then hit the Change All button. That should solve the problem.

Now, about your uninstall problem: if you want to remove older installations
of Office, then the uninstaller will definitely leave your Word files
untouched, in spite of the fact that some of them are now associated with
Word 2001. Even if you didn't do what I told you in the previous paragraph,
you should still have your Word files after the uninstall procedure.

Hi again,

you definitely have more control over the appearance of newsgroup messages
when you use a newsgroup reader instead of the Google interface. Entourage
2004 offers you a couple of options, such as Group Arrangements, that would
allow you to do what you have in mind.

I remember reading a post in which you said that you are currently using
Google to post messages; when you're ready to switch to Entourage, just ask
on the Entourage newsgroup, and you'll be given an answer in no time. I
could give you the answer right now, but I'm not sure if you actually want
to use Entourage. Let me know!

Rafael appears to be using a newsreader now (G2). If it were Entourage, all
you'd have to do, Rafael, is click on the header of the Sent column to
reverse the chronological order. I would expect there to be a similar
function in G2, which I'm not familiar with.

Hi Rafael,

Considering how many problems you have reported recently with Word 2004, I'm
convinced that you've mucked things up by leaving traces of old versions and
their preference files all over your computer :).

If I were you, I would do a *complete* removal of all versions of Office.
Then (and only if you really *need* to use Word 2001), reinstall Office 2001
and update it. Then reinstall Office 2004 and update it. Don't forget to
repair disk permissions after the removal and after each installation.

If you need more specifics, they're here:
<http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/RemoveReinstall.htm>
(If using Safari, hit Refresh once or twice; better yet, use another
browser.)

Your documents will not be affected by any of this although it's always a
good idea to back them up first.

The only differences you might see in Word 2001 docs when they convert to
Word 2004 docs would be in layout. Because Word 2004 uses some different
(Unicode) fonts, you might find, for instance, that what was a ten page
document is now a ten and a quarter page document. Otherwise your
formatting should not be affected.

I understand that having the toolbar customizations saved inthe Normal
template is convenient when you want to deploy a similar setu on
multiple machines, btu as far as *I* am concerned, I would have liked to
have everything in a pref file.
