Hi Rafael,
I did solve the missing view menu by going to
customize/menus>commands>categories>built-in menus, then to the right
press 'view' and drag it to the customize main menu bar.
Yeah, but your prefs are still damaged, considering all the other issues. (I
think.) In general, if Word starts to misbehave, testing your prefs file is
never a bad idea.
Re missing toolbars, I'll look at 'damaged preferences' article. Also
I'll check the
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm.
In Safari, I was looking for 'refresh' as in explorer, but I can only
find 'Reload Page' under View. That's what I've been using and I think
I'm seeing that it does refresh.
Refresh, reload, same difference. In this context, they are synonyms. I'll
change my boilerplate, though, now that you've pointed that out.
By the way: The stop button in the Safari toolbar (icon X) should turn into
a reload button (icon partial circle with arrow) once the page is finished
loading. Under View>Show in Safari, there are about 10 things you can
check/uncheck to control what shows on the toolbar.
There are some wierd things-at least for me so far- going on in
Word 2004. for instance, when I click customize, the screen comes on
and the top of it is behind the toolbars where I can't see the two
tabs, 'Toolbars' and 'Commands'.
That Word doesn't remember where you had the Customize dialog the last time
is probably also caused by the damaged preferences. Not sure what would
cause the original screwiness. Possibly also corrupt prefs. Also, your
toolbars may not be properly docked. Float them around until they drop into
a "sweet spot" at the top of the window. If the toolbars are properly
docked, then Word will automatically move everything out of their way.
However, a fresh set of prefs will probably also re-dock the toolbars in
their default position, so just test the prefs before bothering with that.
The only place to drag the customize
window is from the top, which is hidden behind the toolbars so I have
to move the toolbars out of the way to get at it, a really awkward
thing to do. Didn't previous versions allow sindows to be dragged from
all four sides?
I don't remember. But I think that's related to the change from OS 9 to OS X
rather than Word-specific. I think Apple has guidelines about that.
Another thing is that I can't find a box on a window to close the
window up like a pop-up menu, leaving only its title bar on the
desktop. There used to be a box on the upper right corner with a
vertical line that popped the body of the window out of sight. Is
there a new way to do this?
This is an OS change, not a Word change, so across all apps. The middle
traffic light at top left (yellow) will shrink the page into the dock, and
that's the OS equivalent of clicking to shrink the page up to the title bar.
The previous behavior can only be recaptured with third-party programs.
And another thing. I will be going onto email for this newsgroup when
I get all these new programs sorted out. In the meantime, on this web
newsgroup, I first entered with the nickname the same as my primary
email address. I just changed that to my name for fear of exposing
that address to address harvesting spammers. Is that right? Do they
harvest from this site as they do from our email based NG where I have
a fake DBA?
Well, it's all the same place, just different means of accessing it. Google
hides your email address from people using Google, but I still see it using
the newsreader, so a spammer could too. But I don't know what spammers use
to harvest addresses.
