Opening all excel files - file is locked for editing

Excel 2002 / WindowsXP

The message comes up even when I open excel without trying
to open a worksheet. Moved everything out of xlstart.

Help!

Open Excel from Start>Run and type Excel.exe /Safe

This will open excel in safe mode. Go to Tools>options...>general and clear
any entry in 'At start-up, open all files in:'
