Opening an access 1997 database in Access 2000

I'm just a basic home user of Access. A recent upgrade means I am now running
Acess 2000. I have tried to open a database created in Acess 1997 and
receilve an error message saying ''unrecognized data format''. I have tried
the convert database option in database utilities and that wont work either.
ANy suggestions on how to get around this?
