opening an attachment is not displaying fullstop in file name

We have files which contain for example 'version 1.0.xls'. When this is
opened as an attachment to an email, the file name is displayed as 'version 1
0.xls' .
Don't recall this happening with Office 2000. Is this controlled by a
setting? Is it a new function.
