Opening and closing files in MS Word

Lately, when I try to close a single document in Word, the entire program
shuts down! The little "X" in the upper right-hand corner of the screen does
not close the document, and so my only option is to use the big red "X" that
shuts down the whole program!! I'd like to know how to adjust whatever
settings I must to prevent this from happening.
