Opening and Repaginating

I edit several different long documents of about equal
size, but one of them takes almost a minute to open and
repageinate while the others are just a second or two.
Does anyone have an idea why a document would do this and
how to fix it?

Background repagination is on by default in print layout view, web layout
view and print preview. You cannot turn it off in these views.

To avoid background repagination, switch to normal view or outline view
(View menu) and make sure the Background repagination check box is not
checked (Tools|Options|General tab)

As to why some documents take longer to repaginate than others, see the
following re tables:

For another and far more serious reason as why repagination may be very slow
(or even endless), see the following re document corruption:

I doubt that background repagination is on for Web Layout view, which has no
page breaks at all.
