Opening Attachments

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Email Client: pop

A friend sent me an email message with a Windows excel file attached (a .xls file) and I cannot open it through Entourage. It shows up as a .dat file in my Entourage note. How do I open it? I have the Office Mac 2008 Home & Student edition loaded.
