opening attatchments on a pc

Hi,
I try emailing myself a word attatchment and when I try to open it on a different computer (I have only tried PC, not other macs), I am asked what application I would like to open the file in. When I choose the application (word) gibberish comes up. How do I fix this?

sorry to double post, but I am saving in the .doc 97-04 format, and am using hotmail

Well, Hotmail is pretty toxic, I would get yourself a real email service
(for example, the one your ISP provides to you...)

However, this is likely to be a missing extension plus a bad encoding.

Set your encoding to MIME and add the .doc extension and every computer on
the planet will be able to read it. Or use AppleDouble if you must. BinHex
is guaranteed gibberish on a PC.

You haven't given the rest of your system and version information, so I
can't give you the rest of the information.
