Opening .dat files. NOVELL. Message: cannot be accessed

This is not exactly a crash, but a serious error message
problem for me. I have Windows XP and Excel 2000.

I am trying to do something I have done every day for the
last 2 years - open a .dat or .prn file in excel.

Starting yesterday I have been unable to open files that
are on a Novell Network. I have admin rights to the entire
network so rights should not be a problem. I can open
files on my c: drive and I can open these network files in
other programs such as notepad, but not in Excel. Other
people can open these files from their PC in Excel.
Suggestions???!!!

I fixed it by reinstalling Office. Tried to just fix or
reinstall Excel, didn't make a difference.

Now I can't open Excel files from an icon. Have to open
Excel to open the file. Says it can't find needed
libraries.

I had similar problem. I was trying to access a file on Novell server. I patched Novell Client 4.83 with service pack 2 and that did the trick.
