opening .doc attachments

I just got office for mac. I can open .doc documents from hard drive,
cds, etc. but when I try to open attachments from email, I can't. A
warning box says "name.doc file cannot be opened. Associated helper
application does not exist. Change the association in your
preferences. "
However, I can't seem to do this, or find the preferences where this
is an option. I was able to open these documents when I had test drive
on, but suddenly with the real program I can't do it. Any ideas?

Hello and welcome to a Macworld. It is always a good idea prior to
opening the email attachement save the file on your Mac HDD and then
open it from there. What email client do you use? Sorry we need more
information in order to help you, such as OS you are running, where
and how do you open your attachment, if in Entourage, then it's
current version would be welconed to know (navigate to Entourage>about
entourage)

Hi:

You did not use the Office Remover tool to remove the Test Drive.

Now you have installed the real version, but your preference files are still
pointing at the Test Drive, so when your email program attempts to find
Word, it is pointing to the wrong application.

To fix this, you need to run the Office Remover Tool to remove BOTH versions
of the Office suite. Your data will be quite safe while doing this.

Then re-install the paid-for version and re-apply all the updates to bring
it up to the latest version.

Apply the updates BEFORE you try to run any of the programs, or things may
get nasty.

Sorry: Damned Test Drive Bug strikes again...

Cheers

And afterwards it's a good idea to repair permissions via Disk Utility.
