some folks with pc's are having trouble opening the 08 documents - do we need to convert it to old word somehow before sending as attachments?

No. They need to update their email program to allow the file format
through.

If you can teach them to Save out of their email to the hard disk, Word 2007
will open them straight up. Double-clicking out of the email program is the
problem: some emailers don't recognise the new file type.

Cheers

Maybe. WinWord 2007 will open it no problem, it's the same file format.
If they have WinWord 2003 or earlier, there is a converter (maybe an
update?) that they may not have downloaded. You can always save a .docx
as .doc in the Save As dialog, and Word | Preferences | Save will let
you set a default format to save into.

WinWord 2007 and MacWord 2008 use the same file format--.docx.
