Opening Documents in Word 2008

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

When I click on the File Menu then select Open I get the box to select the file, the box (with the vertical columns) is blank and infinitely wide, it never ends you can scroll sideways forever. The only way out of this is to Force Quit. I can get around this by locating a file via Finder and then clicking on it, word then opens with the document with no issue. All suggestions would be appreciated as I don't like saying my Mac crashed !

Thanks Daiya, deleting the three preference files as suggested in the article did the trick. The File-Open feature not only works, but does so quickly.
Thank you very much.
Yours,
Guy
