Opening .docx documents with Office 2004 for MAC

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel

My students are turning in documents created with the new version of Word for PC that saves as .docx at the end. I can not figure out how to open the documents without asking them to resend it after saving in an older file version. I do not want to keep doing this. What is the fix?
