Opening Excel '08 worksheet tabs become new workbook

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

In a multi-worksheet workbook, pressing a worksheet tab opens a new workbook (new workbook is the clicked worksheet). Closing program and restarts don't help. I'm running the latest update (12/1/7). Help! It is very frustrating.

Same problem here! I also tried to close the program and a restart, but no luck. Hope someone can help out?

Does it happen when you start XL with the Shift key down?

I'm assuming it doesn't happen when you use the keyboard shortcut
(CTRL-PAGE DN)...

Does it happen if you try it in a fresh OSX user account?

Did you just install any other software?

Do you have any haxies running?

Are you on a desktop machine with a mouse? Does it happen with other
mice?

Or, if on a MacBook/MBP, are you using an external mouse or the trackpad?

Thanks to all of you for your input.

I found a (poor) workaround: Thankfully, the problem disappears when I save to a .xls format (Microsoft Office Excel 97-2003 Worksheet), or use a .xls workbook instead of a .xlsx (Excel 2007/08) format. Tells me there may be a bug somewhere...

To answer the questions of J.E. McGimpsey:

Never tried to start program w/ Shift key down.

Don't use the keyboard shortcut to open new worksheet.

Yes it happens w/ a fresh OSX user acct
No other software, other than Office '08 and OSX patches.

No to any hacks.

Only have used program w/ MacBook unibody

Happens w/ the trackpad and mouse.

That's rather strange, especially given that the OXML formats were
specifically supposed to reduce the possibility of corruption, but glad
you found a workaround.
