Opening Excel 97 files in Excel 5.0

No, not if you mean a 97-only XLS file. Excel 97 (and later) include a 95/97
XLS format that basically is two files in one (so double already bloated XLS
file sizes!). Are you running Excel 5 under Windows 95 or later or Windows
3.1?
It's running win 95, with the older version of office (4.3?). We have an
add-in that enables the old version of word to read new version files, and I
wondered if the same exists for Excel? Apparently not.

No.

But the originator can do a save as and choose xl5/xl95 format. No need to
use the more cumberson combined format Harlan described.
