opening excel, powerpoint files

Yesterday when I went to open a simple exel file that I use everyday, the
mesage
of something like "running virus protection" came up (as it always does) in
the bottom left hand corner, but never went off and didn't open the file,
i.e. it would still be going now if I hadn't cntrl-alt-deleted.

Today this happend with other excel and powerpoint files (all that I tried).
What's the first step. Looking at my Norton anti-virus didn't seem to do
much.

The message is
"Running virus scan..."
There are no network drives to turn off (as suggested by Garfield n Oldie in
related roblems from archives)
Maybe if I just turn off Norton Anti-virus?
