opening file path problems

J

jim-g

A friend with MS Office 97 recently started having a problem of when she
goes to 'my documents', clicks on the file to open either Word or Excel,
that the program gives error messages asking the user to check the title or
the file types. After she closes 4-5 error suggestion windows of that
nature, the file opens in the appropriate program OK.

It works perfectly if she opens the program and then... the file from within
the program.

I've check the file pathing in file properties of each of the files plus in
the registry and all is calling them to be in the correct place. Just can't
find where XP Home is giving her the file fits.

Any ideas appreciated.

I suspect this is a matter of simply recreating the file associations for
the applications. For this go to Start/Run and run each of these commands

winword /r
excel /regserver

Note the space before the forward slash.

If this issue continues to occur then please provide the exact wording of
the error messages.
