Opening files from FINDER

All of a sudden, since the last upgrade of OFFICE, I cannot open files
in Word from Finder. They show with either boxes and lines or all the
words in a standard font and the formatting codes at the bottom of the
document. I have re-associated DOC files with Word, to now avail.

When did you last run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions? That should be
your first step. If that doesn't resolve the issue take a look here:

If opening the files from within Words (File>Open) produces similar results
you may have a bad font, corrupt preferences or OS issues that need
attention. Post back if necessary, but please clarify what you mean by
"standard font" & "formatting codes at the bottom"... that really isn't very
descriptive.

Go to the File menu in Word and then to Open. In the resulting dialog box,
at the top, does the Enable box say Recover Text From Any File? If so,
change it to All Word Documents or All Office Documents.

Next time, if you change that setting, remember to change it back. It won't
do so automatically.
