Opening files from server - Views & Filters - Already exist, can't overwrite

S Belling

I'm a Project Server admin and PMO mgr - We are
implementing Prj Svr 2003 and going live as we speak. OUr
project leads (and me) sometimes get messages when opening
projects we've published indicating that various views
(Gantt&, for example) already exist and can't be
overwritten - dialogue box asks if we want to rename it or
cancel the opening of the project.

I've found that if I just add a 1 to the end of the view
name, I can proceed.

Just today I got something similar, except it was
referring to filters that already exist in the enterprise
global template. I was asked to replace, rename or cancel.

What is the root cause of these view and filter issues,
and what should I be doing to fix these?

Thanks,
SBelling

The root cause of this problem is that you have "polluted" the Enterprise
Global with nonenterprise objects, such as the Gantt Chart view. The
Enterprise Global should contain only enterprise objects, such as the
Enterprise Gantt Chart view and Enterprise Entry table. Refer to the
following link for more information about what is causing the problem and
how to fix it permanently:

Hope this helps.

Thanks - this did solve the views issue. Let me tell you
more about what I did, maybe you can help me devise a
solution for our environment and users that will work:

I created enterprise templates that mirror the
deliverables and milestones in our System Development
Lifecycle (SDLC. Unbeknownst to me, I pulled a bunch of
filters into these, several that are also in the
enterprise global template.

So, once having created project plans using these
templates, when users open these projects they then get
prompted to replace or rename the filters in their project.

Can this be fixed by using the Organizer and deleting the
filters that are duplicative of the enterprise global
filters?

In the meantime, I went into these templates and removed
all of the filters, save all tasks, on the premise that
users can add filters they want from the enterprise global
template.

FYI, I am also getting this with a table view.

Thanks,
SBelling

You need to remove all nonenterprise objects, such as Views, Tables,
Filters, Groups, etc. from the enterprise project template. In the
Organizer dialog, make sure on each page that you select both the Task and
Resource options to see all objects on that page. Hope this helps.

Dale:

I think I understand...

You mean to say that I need to open up the templates that
I have created, and remove the items that would be
duplicated in the Enterprise Global Template.

Is that correct?

Oops! I goofed in my last post. I said "enteprise project template" when I
needed to say "Enterprise Global" template.

Open the Enterprise Global (Tools - Enterprise Options - Open Enterprise
Global. Click Tools - Organizer. Examine the right side of the following
pages and look for nonentenprise objects: Views, Tables, Filters, and
Groups. The only objects that should appear on the right side are default
enterprise objects, such as the Enterprise Gantt Chart view and Enterprise
Entry table, and any custom enterprise objects you have created.

If you see views like Gantt Chart and Resource Sheet, delete them. If you
see Tables such as the task Entry and resource Entry tables, delete them.
You need to delete them because they are local nonenteprise objects and
should not be in the Enterprise Global. Reread the link I sent you
originally about how these migrate accidentally into the Enterprise Global.
Hope this clarification helps.
