opening files on network problem

i am running excel 2002 on windows xp pro and my server is
2000. when ever i open an excel file up on the xp
machine, it opens two instances on the server. then if i
close the files and go to reopen it says the file is
already open as it only closes 1 instance on the server.
this is only happening with excel and not with word or
access docs.

any ideas ????
