Opening files

Bob

When I try to open an office file (.ppt, .doc, .xls) I get the
following message:

The operation could not be completed
An unexpected error occurred (error code - 10660)

If I use the 'Open With' function, then I can do it. But the problem
is that when I bought this iMac I moved all my applications from my old
iMac. However, the new iMac comes with a trial version of Office,
which is the default for opening all files. I have uninstalled the
trial version of office, but using the trial version is still the
option. I tried changing the "open with" in the Get Info screen, but
it still goes back to the default - which is the trial verison.

I think I need to know where the defaults are for opening office
applications and change the pointer.

Any ideas?

Thanks

It sounds like you didn't do a proper uninstall of the Test Drive software,
so remnants left behind are haunting you :)

If you simply trashed the Test Drive folder you may need to download &
reinstall it in order to use the Remove Office utility to clear it all out.
I'm not sure how you "moved" your applications (nor what version of Office
we're talking about for that matter) but you may need to Uninstall that &
reinstall from your source disks. But first....

The error is indicating that the file you're trying to open can't find its
parent application. When you do the Get Info & select the correct program
make sure to choose the option for All Files of this Type. Also, make sure
to run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions on you hard disk. If you
haven't been doing this it's worth a try, but still may not work.

If necessary, follow the appropriate instructions for your version of Office
