Opening Files

I recently reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled everything from back
up CD's. Now my Excel files and/or shortcuts will not open when double
clicked. I get this message "there was a problem sending the command to the
program".

I have tried opening the file with Works and saving it as a works file. It
opens cleanly when I click on the file/chortcut icon. Save that file as
*.xls and the same problems happens. If I open the Excel program, and then
go to the file open dialogue box, the file opens fine.

Any ideas would be appreciated!!

Does it work if you re-create a shortcut icon (from scratch) for an Excel
file?

No...can't open the original file or shortcut without first opening Excel
and then going to file open.

Excel has lost its file association.

Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes and note the space before the /
mark).

Then re-register by Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver

You may have to enter your full path to excel.exe....in that case surround
with quotes as in..... "C:\mypath\to Excel\somewhere\excel.exe" /unregserver

Back in trouble again with Excel 97. I messaged you last night that
everything was ok after reinstalling program. This morning back to square
1....try and open file from shortcut or file and I get this message "there
was a problem sending the command to the program"!!

I tried Gord Dibben solution of unregistering and then reregistering
program. Didn't do a thing...but ran ok...couldn't open Excel after
unregistering and then could open ok after reregistering..but when I try and
open from a file I get the above message.

More help needed...thanks in advance!!

Do you have ZoneAlarm installed on your system? If so, try the following:

1. Adjust your Zone Alarm Settings as follows:

- Open Zone Alarm and choose Program Control.
- Click the Programs tab
- Scroll down to Windows Explorer and make sure you Allow access.
Note: You can also choose Prompt and it will ask the first time you
try to perform these functions.
Also, look for the specific programs like Word or Excel
in the list and configure them appropriately.

Or

2. Uninstall ZA, get the latest updated version and install it.
