Opening in Page Layout in Word 2004

Felix Peng

Hi. I was wondering if anyone knows of any way that I can get Word 2004 to
open in page layout view. Word had been opening in Notebook Layout by
default for the last few days, and I personally find that to be very
irritating. I went in and "changed" the Normal template by adding a space
then deleting it in page layout, but that didn't do anything.

I've also noticed that my tab preferences have not been saved in the normal
template; every time I open a new document the tabs are at 12.4 mm (or
whatever the amount is) as opposed to 15 mm (as I have set them, and
reflected in the Normal template).

I greatly appreciate any information anyone has.

Hi Felix,

Sounds possibly like the the Normal template that you are looking at is not
the same one Word is using. The View Word opens in does have a tendency to
get confused, but tabs should absolutely match the settings in Normal.

You didn't create a template and save it as Normal, did you? That's a common
cause of problems like this.

Look in Word | Preferences | File Locations and see what Word has identified
as the Normal template. Is it the same?

Hm... I looked at what you suggested, and strangely, there is no path
location for the Normal template. The only file type that actually specifies
a location is "User templates". There is no mention of a location for
anything else, and there is actually no mention of a normal template

You're right. John got that wrong. The location of the Normal template
(which, in previous versions of Word, used to be by default in that user
Templates folder so no further location pref was necessary) in not specified
in File Locations preferences. But it was moved in 2004 to the Microsoft
User Data folder in ~/Documents. In fact, it can't be anywhere else. If you
move it anywhere else (including to the user Templates folder), Word will
make a brand new default one in the MUD folder. So just leave it there.

Well... I did indeed leave it there... But that still does nothing. Is there
anything that I can do to solve the problem, or would it be possible to
reinstall word, or something or other?

Daiya got that wrong, not John--I was spaced out, sorry.

*don't* reinstall Word--there are many easier things to do first, and
reinstalling only helps if you run the remove tool first.

Can you confirm, first:
Is the Normal in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data one that was created by
Word, *not* you saving a template as Normal?

Is that the same file that you changed when you say you changed the tabs in
Normal and tried to change the Page Layout?

A few possibilities:

Option 1: Normal is not corrupted--Word does have a tendency to get confused
about which view to open, and I think Notebook Layout increases that
tendency. It is possible to force the desired view with a macro (which we
can provide/help with).

The tab problem could be caused by a failure to Select All before you
changed the tabs in Normal itself.

Option 2: assume the Normal is corrupted and try the standard
troubleshooting tricks--in this case, I think first Repair Permissions and
second Generate a New Normal Template, both of which are detailed on links
from here:
http://word.mvps.org/mac/TroubleshootingIndex.html

I think I'd go with option 2, unless you have a lot of customizations in
your Normal template.

Sorry about the spacey response first time around.
