Opening links to image files from inside a report printed to pdf

I have printed an Access report to PDF. The report has hyperlinks to external
JPG files.

When I open the report in a PDF viewer, I can successfully go to the linked
files if I use Firefox as my default browser, but not if I use IE as my
default browser.

The image files are referenced in the PDF document as #file:///C:
/xxxx/yyyy/mmm.jpg# .

The recipients of the report will be supplied with a CD of image files which,
after the recipients have created a C:\xxxx\yyyy directory, will be copied by
them into that directory. The goal is that they can click on a link in the
PDF report that will open the selected image stored at C:\xxxx\yyyy .

Can anyone advise how I can get IE to work as an image browser, or if there
is another simple way of browsing the images (other than by the recipients
installing Firefox)?

I appreciate that this query is very much at the periphery of AccessMonster's
subject matter, but I have so far spent 2 days unsuccessfully trawling other
forums for an answer. I would be extremely grateful for any guidance.

I think my problem lay in the hashes at the start and end of the
directory/file reference.

If I refer to the image files as file:///C:/xxxx/yyyy/mmm.jpg , I can
activate the links in Firefox and IE. I can also do the same if I only have
two forward slashes after "file:". I'm not sure of the significance of two
versus three slashes.
