Opening more than one copy of a document

I sometimes have to translate a document by replacing the text in
the original. However, i would like to be able to view the unaltered
original while I am doing this. In Word 2003 for the PC, I can open
two copies at the same time but I have not been able to get this
to work in Word 2004 for the Mac. Is there some way to do this?

It's the same place it is on the PC: Window>Split...

However, what I would do (... The only SAFE thing to do) is to open the
original and Save As under a different file name. Then re-open the original
as a separate document.

This enables you to continue to save the translated copy while you are
working without changing the original.

I normally set the original file to Read Only so it always opens that way.

To avoid getting confused, I normally highlight all of the text in the
original and apply a pale pink background, to remind me not to change that
one because it's the original. I can thus see at a glance which window is
open.

Hope this helps

Or Window | New Window will give you a full new window with the same
document, instead of one split in half.

But I'm with John--I would ABSOLUTELY DEFINITELY use two separate
documents for this via a Save As.
