Opening .msg files in Entourage 2004 on Mac

Chrishow

A colleague of mine has been using Outlook 2002 to save individual
message files to a shared drive on his file server. His business
partner is now trying to open these files using Entourage 2004 on his
Mac. The problem is, it doesn't appear that the .msg file type is
readable by Entourage.

Has anyone come across this issue in the past? Any ideas on a solution?
(other than investing in an Exchange server!)

What if you change the extension to .eml? Does that work? I have a foggy
recollection about changing an extension. Hopefully someone will chime in
to help!

No, you cannot simply change an Outlook .msg file into .eml format by
changing the extension. They're different formats, and only Outlook can read
..msg files.

What the colleague can do is open and save them back in Outlook on the PC.
(Maybe just drag them into a mail folder in Outlook will do it.) Then - in
Outlook EXPRESS on the PC, import that folder from Outlook. (He may have to
import all his mail folders, or maybe just that one.) Then drag these
messages out from Outlook Express - that will save them as .eml files. The
..eml files can then be saved to CD, and they _will_ be readable in Entourage
on the Mac. Again you can just select all of them at once and drag them into
an Entourage mail folder to import them there.
