Opening Multiple Documents = Multiple Instances of Word

C

Chris Brady

I have Word 2000 (SR - 1) running under Windows XP.

If I select a number of Word documents in Windows Explorer and then
hit Enter instead of all of the documents opening into a single
instance of Word, they each open up an instance of Word which then
crashes my PC due to memory problems.

In Excel 2000 there is an option that you can set to stop this kind of
thing. But in Word it seems that opening multiple documents results in
multiple instances of Word!!

What's the setting I need to use to stop this please?

Many thanks -

CJB.

Chris,

I've got SP-2, but it should be something like

Menu: Tools > Options
"View" Tab
Clear the "Windows in TaskBar" checkbox.

It is not actually opening a new instance of Word for each document, but
a new Word window with its own taskbar button, it's called Single
Document Interface as
compared with MultiDocument interface that existed in earlier versions.
This (for many
people) unwanted behavior is built into Word 2000 and no alternative is
given. You have three options if you don't like it: get Word 2002
(which allows either SDI or MDI); go back to an earlier version of Word;
or see this article which presents a macro that allows you to replicate
the MDI.
