Opening older versions of Word

M

Mark Horowitz

I am running Office X. I am trying to open some older Word files and I
cannot open them with Word X or Word 2001 in Classic. I have Word 6 in
Classic, but when I try to open it, it says I can't because MSobjectLib
is missing. I no longer have the original Word 6 disks. Is there
anything I can do about this? Is there somewhere online that I can get
these old extensions I need?

P.S. What file should MicrosoftObjectLibrary be in?

Thanks for any help on this. There are a lot of files I thought I
wouldn't need that it turns out I do.

I thought Office 98 was the earliest version to run in Classic? Did Word 6
*ever* run in Classic, or OS 9?

Have you tried using File | Open from within Word 2001 or X? Setting Enable
to Recover Text from Any File can be fairly powerful. (but remember to turn
it off after using it). Word 2004 doesn't appear to have any converters for
Word 5 or 6 listed under Enable, but earlier versions may.

If you have a lot of files, it may be worth buying DataViz's conversion
software:

But probably all you need is someone else who is running Word 6 to help you
out. Unfortunately, I don't think there are that many people here, though
some might still come along. I wonder if there might be more on some of the
non-MS Mac newsgroups on usenet. I doubt there's anywhere from MS to get
old extensions, but try google, somebody might have them on a personal site.
