Opening older Word files with Word 2003 / Windows 2000 Server

Having upgrade a network from NT4 server and Windows 98
clients running Office 97 SR-2 to Windows 2000 Server
(Active Directory) and Windows XP Pro SR1 running Office
2003 Pro (with all updates installed) it seems to take an
age for the older Word files to load with Task Manager
showing Word 2003 not responding. Files created with Word
2003 open instantly. I have even taken copies of two files
and put onto a completely different network with the same
results. This is proving infuriating and time consuming so
any help would be appreciated.
