Opening Older Word Formats

Had to wipe my Macbook Pro, re-install Leopard, and re-install Office 2008. It automatically updated to Word 12.1.2. Now, all of a sudden, I cannot open .DOC files others sent me from a Windows machine. Work-around I was sent to does not help. Stored attached .DOC file, tried to open it from the File menu, get error message that "Possibly not a Word document". etc. Cannot get at the document what ever I try.

Is there a work-around I am not aware of? Is there a fix on the horizon?

Hi Tom:

I suggest that that problem is with the email application, not with Word.

If it really is a .doc file, Word 2008 version 12.1.2 will open it straight
up. Just because it has the extension .doc, does NOT mean that the file
contains Word binary data. But if it doesn't, Word can't open it.

Which email application are they using to send to you? Which email
application are you using to receive.

No, there's no fix on the way for this: it's not a problem with Word.

Cheers

Echoing John's statement this isn't an inherent Word problem... Have you
repaired permissions since reinstalling/updating Office 2008?
