opening pictures using word07

why is it when i try to open a picture or a file using microsoft word 2007 it
gives me a box with a bunch of symbols and will not allow me to open a
picture file or any other file that is saved on my system

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Word cannot "open" any graphic file formats. It can "insert" them into a
document, and that's all.

Use the Picture button on the Insert tab of the ribbon, which will give you a
dialog similar to the Open dialog, but set to display graphic files.
