Opening previous version Excel documents

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Power PC

I can't seem to open previous version or PC version Excel documents by double clicking on them with my newly installed Office 2008. I get into the app but no document opens. If I go to the OPEN DOCUMENTS command I can open them but no other way. What is wrong?
