Opening recently created or edited files using the keyboard

I have recently moved from years of Windows to the Mac. I'm trying to find ways of using the same types of keyboard shortcuts to open files previously edited or used in Word or Excel. In Windows Word I'd use a keystroke to pull down the File menu and then hit the number in front of the file at the bottom of the menu and it would open.

How would I use similar keyboard shortcut(s) to do the same in Office Mac?

Thank you.
