Opening saved documents

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

When i open certain saved documents in my finder,they open as a NEW document (document 1 etc( which i then have to save as a new file. It is impossible to continue work on the original document that i saved. I guess i must have done something...any ideas??

If it either has the file extension .dot or .dotx that means you saved
it as a Template... do a Save As .doc or .docx
