Opening the query closes the database

When I open an existing query in design mode, if one of
the tables in the query is missing (renamed,deleted,linked
table need to be relinked) it closes the database
completely. This started just recently and sometimes it
happens with queries that have just one table or more than
1 table. Before it would tell me that the for certain
table, join fields are missing and it will open the query.
The only way that I know of to find out which table is
missing is to try to run it. If I don't have a record of
the missing table, I wouldn't be able to create a similar
one with the same structure. I tried to compact database,
or create a new database, but the problem still occurr.
Any suggestion why is happening and how to stop it?
