Opening time of html file saved from Visio

B

Bec

I have a rather large file (15M) that I save as a webpage (goes to 35M) and
then I am hosting it on our companies intranet. The trouble is that the
opening time is very long. It is fine once you are in the file but just takes
forever to open.

I am trying to understand a. how the web pages work once saved from Visio
and b. if there is a way to force caching, or have it open another way to
make this process quicker. I think it may be opening the entire 35M file to
begin with rather than just the page that is required.

Any help as to how this process works (i.e what is happening in the
background when Visio saves as a webapge) and any help on a solution would be
wonderful!

Thanks
Bec

I'm having the same trouble. Look at the pages that Visio creates;
it's ridiculous. My pages are 1.5 megs each, with a 3 meg XML file.
Most of this is definitions of walls and such (it's a floorplan).

Here's an example of the code that visio writes, just for ONE ENTRY in
my floorplan; notice the repetition of coordinates again and again:

<AREA shape="POLYGON" tabindex="1" ALT="John Doe 7665"
origTitle="John Doe 7665" TITLE="John Doe 7665" target="_top"

For both of you,
What kind of diagrams are you creating with Visio ?
Do you need to show as a Vector file or can you convert to JPG or GIF
etc
which may ( depending on the image ) be much smaller file.
If needed in vector format can you save as WMF or EMF and use
another tool to present that ?

For that matter - do you need to use Visio for creating the images ?
What Visio features are you using ?

In my case, It's a floorplan with metadata - click on an office, and
get the details for that person. The metadata is fed from Outlook.

In V2k7, the PDF support is almost good enough to do what I need -
with only 900K. Now if I can just get the PDF exporter to quit jacking
my image up...It's vertically compressing it and cutting it off on the
right (it's a 20x20" image, and it's trying to put it on a 8.5x11,
even with the default page size changed to 20x20).

Funny though, is that i you just "save as PDF or XPS", it sizes just
fine - except the metadata isn't saved...

Microsoft, you're killing me.

First - Dengle, let's see if we can focus on clarifying the nature
of the problem - as I understand you have some initial floorplan and
then you use Visio to mark hotspots on the floorplan and export these
as HTML Image Maps that are included in the web page with the same
initial floorplan. And your problem seems to be that Visio is making
really HUGE image maps ( too many coordinates for relatively simple
hotspot shapes) - thus the floorplan size is not the issue, but rather
the size of the image map.

Is this all basically correct ?

One possibility - since coordinates of hotspots are repeated, maybe
the way you are creating the hotspot regions in Visio leads Visio to
think that you have more than one of each shape ? Could you
describe that process of how you create the shapes and how you
export.
Maybe this description will lead to a solution.

Otherwise, I'm not sure how to resolve within Visio, but I can suggest
that there are other tools for creating ImageMaps. My company has
one ( MetaDraw ) and I'd be happy to discuss with you if you like, but
I'm sure there are also others. Have you considered any of
these ?

Thanks for the assist, but the problem isn't as described. The
hotspots aren't added by me; these are auto-generated by Visio 2k3
(and I now find 2k7) in response to revealing metadata stored in Visio
objects.

Certainly, I could write an app that used AJAX to pull from the XML
file server side, and hand-draw all my imagemaps - but This is
something that a user is maintaining, and we don't want to go to that
much trouble - it needs to be something that can be exported within
Visio, and unfortunately Visio's exporter is broken (or at least
inefficient) :(.

Thanks, though!

Don.

Have you try to use the visio viewer ? Simply copy the visio native page to
the server.
