opening windows crashes my computer

Help

I'm having some trouble. When I try to open word my
computer will either freeze or I get an error saying that
I don't have enough resource to run this program and then
my whole coputer needs to be shut down. If I do get word
to open I soon have the same result. could this be a
result of some virus? Should I delete the program from my
hard drive and then reinstall it? Will this erase my
files that I created in word?

try renaming normal.dot, and moving any files out of the Startup
folder.
