Opening Windows xp 2003 Word in Mac Windows 2004 - doesn't!

I'm new ot Mac, so be kind ;-)
Just installed office 2004, and trying to open word 2003 xp docs. All I
get are the whirling rainbows! I can start new docs, but not open
transferred windows docs. CAN open them in appleworks and text editor
though.
Help!

Happy Holidays

Hmmm. You *should* be able to open the Word 2003 docs in Word 2004 with no
problems.

Are the Word 2003 docs being transferred via email?

Do they display the .doc file extension?

Are you downloading them to the desktop before trying to open them?

Have you tried opening them from within Word (File> Open)?

Have you updated your new installation of Office 2004 all the way to 11.2.1?

Can you have someone on Windows create an extremely simple Word doc (just a
few words will do) and send it to you? Any problem with that?

I transferred all the doc files via my network, placing them in a
seperate 'doc' directory. Most everything was xp office 2003, though
some go back to 98. All have the doc extension. I try to open them from
Word, file>open, and word just sits there spinning the rainbow. I have
to force quit to egt out. Word is up to date all the way.
Don't reallywant to email the files, as there are hundreds and
hundreds...
Emailed two fiels to mac, and word won't open them, either directly
from within mail, or from saved to desktop.

Excel & powerpoint presented no problems opening transferred windows
files....

I'm stumped!

Well, I'm stumped too :). Can you send me a couple of these Word 2003
files? Be sure the Subject of your email remains the same as this thread so
your post doesn't get thrown out with the trash.

Update:

Bob sent me two WinWord-created docs which both opened fine for me in Word
2004. That means that something is wrong with his installation of Word. I
have suggested that he test for add-in conflicts, damaged preferences, a
corrupt Normal template; and, if he left older versions of Word on the
computer before installing 2004, that he do a complete removal and
reinstall. He'll post back here with any follow-up.
