Opening Word 2004 files into Word 2008

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

When I click on an attachment that is a Word 2004 (or earlier Word version) to open it, it will not open into my Word for Office 8. Even some older files in my Documents will not open into the new Word version. Is there an easy answer?

The most likely explanation is that you haven't yet updated to 12.1.2, which
should correct the situation. Remember to repair disk permissions after
applying the update.
