opening word attachments from email

When ever I try to open an attachment that someone else
has sent me (typed in word) I get an error saying 'unable
to find file.' Almost like it is trying to find it in my
files. Any help?

SAVE THE ATTACHMENT to your local HDD before trying to open it.

I have the same problem, with the additional problem (since installing SP2
for XP) of not being able to open a document using Explorer. I have to open
Word first and then find the document and open it. Before SP2, I could open
attachments to emails or files in Explorer by simply double clicking on them.
Now I have to save email attachments to my HDD, open Word, and then find the
file; or, if I am using Explorer, I can open Word by double-clicking on a
file, but it does not open the document. It only opens Word and then I have
to use the Open file option in Word to open the document.

Is there a setting somewhere I can change to fix this new challenge?..John

That's a lazy answer. You shouldn't have to save to the hard drive first!
There is a fix to this... if only I could remember it... (Which is why I'm
looking on here, and not having much luck)

That is not a "lazy answer." That is the product of long experience and the
wisdom acquired thereby.

I disagree - the lazy answer is not taking a few seconds to save to
your HD first.

Granted opening the attachment directly if you simply want to view the
document is fine but once you get into the habit of doing this you
don't want to discover the hard way that you can easily lose all
modifications you made to a document if you edit it after opening it
directly from the email.

Here's a thread you may be interested in reading:

Plus the new security options in Outlook 2003 will force you to save
certain file attachments, such as Word documents, prior to opening
them. Considering I've encountered losing several hours worth of work
and learned this lesson the hard way, I have no problem saving to my
HD first.
