Opening Word .DOCs from DOS in 2003/2007

All of a sudden, I cannot open old Word files created in DOS word any longer
(message states they are blocked by registry settings). I think this was a
result of adding hte 2007 compaibility pack to 2003. There used to be
utilities for this and I am now stumped on how to open these files (I assumed
this was a security-mandated change, but it is a problem for people like me
who have 20 years of Word files around). Anyone know a fix, either in a menu
I have missed or a registry entry?
