Opening Word Document

Are there any format steps for converting a Word document
so that it might be opened in Excel, other than first
converting it to a Text document. When I have gone
through the Text step, I end up with a row that cannot be
placed in a column without moving each entry.

In the text import wizard, you couldn't use one of the options to break it
into columns?
