Opening Word Documents from icons

Joe

I have several machines on a network I administer that cannot open word
documents by clicking on the icon. This is the case when trying to open out
of an attachment to an Outlook message, or by double clicking on a file in
My Documents. However, if I open Word and use file, open, then the document
opens every time. When you try to open from an icon there is a window
titled "program error" with contents "WINWORD.exe has generated errors and
will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error
log is being generated." Another window then comes up with the path to the
document in the title, and the message, "Cannot find the file'c:\Documents
and Settings\gwt\My Documents\doc1.doc' (or one of its components). Make
sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are
available." The path in the error message is always the correct path to the
actual document the user is trying to open.

This happens on both XP and 2000 machines with Microsoft Office 2000 SP1.
Because of the software that this company runs to generate documents using
Word, I cannot install any other Office service packs or updates. This
problem doesn't occur 100% of the time. I thought I had a correlation that
it happened when Word wasn't already open, but I think that fell through. I
can't come up with a rhyme or reason for this one.

Out of 20 machines in this office that are pretty much identical, 5 or 6
have this problem.

Any help is appreciated,

Joe

Do you use Norton AV? If so then it could be causing the error. There
is a known issue with an option in Norton AV called the "Office
Plug-in" and the inability to open files outside the application.
Other known issues with the plug-in are conflicts with third-party
add-ins which result in errors.

If you are using Norton AV then in Norton Options go to the
Miscellaneous section and turn off "Enable Office Plug-in".

Thanks Beth, it looks like this option doesn't apply to Norton Corporate
like we have. Any other ideas for me on this one?

If Norton AV was installed at one time then we've found the DLL for
the Office Plug-in is still registered and being utilized.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:
