Opening word/excel files

I have Office 2000, running XP. Word and Excel programs
all open fast from desktop icon. If I try to open a Word
or Excel file from the saved document it takes a long
time before the file is opens. Thsi was never a problem
before but now is. Computer has 768m of RAM.
