Opening word v.x documents in PC word 2002

I seem to be unable to open Word v.x documents saved on my Mac on my PC w/
Word 2002.

When I "save as" the document in Word v.x I have "APPEND FILE EXTENSION"
checked but that doesn't seem to help.

What am I missing?

It's a bit hard to guess from that. It works fine for me. For small
values of 'fine'.

How are you copying them over to the PC? In what sense are you 'unable
to open'? Is there an error message? Does PC Word fall over? Does green
slime come out between the numeric keypad's keys?

Can you chop the problem in parts? Do text files copy OK? How's about
pictures? Can the Mac read the PC's Word files? How about e-mailing
zipped up docs? Somebody else's Mac? PC?
