Opening word with document

My boss saved a word doc in Oct. now whenever he opens word to do a new
document it opens with the old document on the screen. He does not want this
old doc to open when he opens word. How do I rectify this situation? Thanks.

He accidentally saved the document over normal.dot. Take a look here for the
