Opening word X documents on a PC with word 2000

i am coming across a problem which is when word X (Mac osx 10.3)
documents are opened in office 2000 (PC Win 2k) it gives an option for file
convert and then which ever option i select it shows up as pages and pages
of ascii like text and not the original formatted document.
Has anyone come across this probelm themselves and do they know how to
sort it.
I have tried putting a .doc extension at the end of the file names but this has
not worked.

You should not have a problem, it's the same file format since Word 97....

Be sure you do not have Recover Text From Any File selected in the File |
Open menu on the PC.

If the documents have images, there was a converter left out of some WinWord
versions, so try running Office Update on the PC.

If you are emailing these documents from one computer to another, they might
have been munged in transit or not encoded properly on the Mac email
program. Post back for more on that if you eliminate the first two options,
or look up "attachment encoding" in the Mac email program Help, or test it
by sending attachments zipped.
